Over time, facial skin thins and loses elasticity. Combined with the depletion of subdermal fat, this leads to volume loss, leaving the skin sagging, gaunt, and tired looking. Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM, Restylane®, Radiesse, Sculptra, and others can transform problem areas from the temples to the cheeks and lips.

Understanding the Aging Process

“Aging” is not a single process. Some wrinkles and lines are caused by reduced collagen production and muscle action. Others are caused by the loss of fat and moisture under and within the skin.

Over time, skin can become thinner, and the underlying layer of healthy fat can disappear, and droop. The underlying bone resorbs as well. When this happens, your face can look gaunt and tired. The skin on the cheeks begins to sag, creating jowls and wrinkles around the mouth, chin, and neck.

Combined with other factors, like a lack of hydration, exposure to UV light, and environmental factors, your face begins to look wrinkled and older.

Dermal fillers, sometimes called skin fillers, offer Colleyville and Fort Worth area patients the chance to rejuvenate their faces without the need for invasive surgery. Advanced products like Radiesse, Sculptra, Restalyne®, and JUVÉDERM can revitalize your skin, lift it, and erase fine lines and wrinkles, removing years from your appearance.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are precisely what they sound like – products designed to help fill in where volume has been lost to the aging process. All dermal fillers are injected into the target area (or nearby), similarly to BOTOX. However, where BOTOX addresses dynamic muscle movement-related wrinkles and lines, dermal fillers address the loss of volume, gauntness, and sagging skin.

Each dermal filler is slightly different in terms of ingredients and function, though. We want you to make the most informed decision possible when it comes to rejuvenating your features and part of your initial consultation will be an introduction to the various dermal filler options available, as well as a comparison to find the right one to meet your goals and expectations. Some of the most popular dermal fillers on the market today include the following:

JUVÉDERM – This filler is based on hyaluronic acid (HA), which is naturally present in the body but declines with age. However, our clinic uses vegan HA not derived from animals to minimize the risk of side effects. HA acts like a cushion once injected under the skin, plumping, lifting, and minimizing lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

Restylane®: Like JUVÉDERM, Restylane® is based on HA. It can be used in many areas of the face, and different versions (Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, etc.) can offer benefits for limp enhancement, smoothing wrinkles around the mouth, and more.

Radiesse – This dermal filler is based on hydroxyapatite, which is better suited for treating mild to moderate facial wrinkles and folds, such as the creases that extend from the corners of your nose toward your mouth (called nasolabial folds). Hydroxyapatite adds volume under the skin and naturally stimulates your body’s collagen production. It can last a year or more and is the heaviest filler offered.

Sculptra – This filler is based on poly-L-lactic acid. It is designed to plump your skin but also gently restart your own body’s collagen production for long-lasting results. Note that Sculptra does require several injections over time, usually about a month apart. The results take time to develop but can last up to two years for many patients.

Are Dermal Fillers an Alternative to Face Lifts?

Dermal fillers are minimally invasive and offer long-lasting but not permanent benefits. As such, many women and men choose them instead of more invasive surgeries, like facelifts. They have no recovery time, minimal side effects, and can be repeated as often as necessary.

Additionally, dermal fillers can be used in what’s called a liquid facelift. This involves using dermal fillers to restore lost volume across the face, including around the eyes, the temples, and the cheeks. They can be combined with BOTOX for more comprehensive results, as well. They can also be used around the nose to make subtle changes to its shape (called liquid rhinoplasty).

However, for patients who desire more substantial or longer-lasting results, other procedures are available. Facelifts can restore a youthful appearance to the face and neck, and the results last for a very long time. Rhinoplasty (nose jobs) is also a popular procedure for those with breathing problems (nasal-related).

What Are the Side Effects of Dermal Fillers?

Most patients who receive dermal fillers in Fort Worth and Colleyville experience mild side effects, including redness and slight swelling at the injection site(s). Some people report temporary numbness that goes away very quickly.

Are Dermal Fillers Painful?

No, dermal filler injections are not painful. Many patients do not even require an anesthetic during their treatment. However, we offer a local anesthetic for those concerned about discomfort, as well as nitrous oxide.
